The image of the elusive being was first spotted off the coast of Deception Island in the South Shetlands on Google Earth on April 9 and shared through a video on YouTube in an effort to solve the oceanic mystery.
There is an old theory that a sea monster, similar in form to the giant squid, roamed the waters of Norway and Greenland sinking boats and ships by smashing them with his tenticles.
Others theories however suggest that the creature is a “plesiosaur”, a marine reptile from the Jurassic ages. “When I saw it, it immediately made me think of a plesiosaur fin,” the YouTube user who uploaded the video wrote.
The image can be viewed on Google Earth using the coordinates 63° 2’56.73″S 60°57’32.38″W.
